Chronic illness takes its toll on the body and one area that can suffer in particular is our skin. Dark circles, dull, sallow skin and even breakouts can plague those of us suffering from chronic illnesses. Some conditions even have symptoms that directly affect the skin, causing painful rashes and redness.
Although medication may be required in some circumstances (depending on the illness involved and symptoms), if you suffer from any of the above problems, it is worth keeping in mind that what we eat can have a direct influence on the appearance of our skin. It is, therefore, beneficial to eat a diet abundant in fresh, organic (where possible) vegetables and fruit.
Fruits and vegetables are packed full of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants that can all help to improve the appearance of our skin; adding brightness and protecting our skin from premature aging. Here are just a few foods to consider adding to your diet and the benefits they can have for your skin. Remember, though, that this list is not set in stone and it is worth take into consideration any food intolerances or allergies you personally have and adapting for them:
1. Cranberries for protection against premature ageing
Cranberries are packed full of antioxidants, which help to protect your cells against damage from free radicals. Free radicals contribute to ageing so eating cranberries can be one step towards younger looking skin. There is one caveat; go easy on cranberries if you are on Warfarin (some studies have shown an interaction between the two).
2. Broccoli for improving acne
Broccoli is a great food to eat if you suffer from acne. It contains vitamins A, C and K, which help to reduce inflammation, improve the appearance of skin and protect cell function. Vitamin C can also help to reduce dark spots on the skin, which can result from acne. Furthermore, broccoli is a good source of calcium and, as dairy can worsen acne, you can instead choose green vegetables such as broccoli to get this vital nutrient into your diet.
3. Avocado for glowing skin
Avocado is rich in fibre and many skin-boosting nutrients. It is another great source of vitamins E and C, known to improve skin’s luminosity and reduce inflammation respectively. Avocados are full of healthy fats, which can help to prevent dry skin if eaten regularly. You can also use avocado directly on the skin as a natural skin mask.
4. Garlic for antimicrobial protection
Garlic helps to reduce inflammation in the body. It contains allicin– known for its anti-microbial properties– which supports immune and gut function, improving our overall health and the appearance of our skin.
5. Kale for its skin-clearing properties
Kale is often referred to as a super-food, and it’s for a good reason. It is packed full of nutrients, such as vitamins A, B-complex, C, E and K, as well as the minerals calcium, folate, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and potassium, which all help to keep our skin clear and looking healthy.
Do you incorporate the above foods into your diet? Are there any others that you have found beneficial to your skin? Let me know in the comments down below.
