Since 2016, I have been choosing a word of the year in lieu of setting New Year’s Resolutions. In this post, I chat about my chosen word of the year for 2020 and share 100+ ideas to help you decide on your own.

What is a Word of the Year?

If you are new to the concept, it’s essentially a word that describes what you want to embrace more of in the coming year. This word will be central to the goals you want to set for yourself, plus the subsequent actions you will take to achieve them.

My Word of the Year for 2020

In previous years, my chosen word has come to me relatively easily. My past words were hope, joy, patience and create.

It took a little brainstorming, but for 2020, I have chosen the word build.

There are two main aspects of my life I want to look to work on. I feel I have set the foundations and now I need to look towards sustainably building upon them.

Building An Income For Myself

May 2019 saw me open my Etsy shop. I understood it was something that would be a slow burn for me as I had to balance creating my inventory with managing my health. But, I was keen to start where I was.

I didn’t set myself any sales targets for 2019. My only aim for the end of 2019 was to have 50 items listed in my shop. I’m happy to say I achieved that.

One of the things I’m learning about Etsy is the more listings you have, the more traction your shop gets. When I hit 40 listings, I started to get one or two orders a week on Etsy.

I want to build on my inventory and reach 100 listings in 2020. My hope is that this will result in more regular orders in 2020 and I’ll make steps towards building a small income for myself.

In addition to this, I’d like to build my own e-commerce site that is separate from Etsy (it’s never wise to have your eggs in one basket). My vision is that this will be an extension of my blog.

Building My Fitness

The second main area I want to work on is my health. More specifically, I want to build on what I have achieved so far and work on slowly and sustainbly build my fitness and stamina.

This was something I started last year but it went on pause when I had my diagnostic laparoscopy surgery in September. Since then, I have been taking things easy.

I’d like to pick-up where I left off and re-introduce exercises to slowly build up my strength. For me, I feel it’s important to build on my muscle strength as the stronger my body is, the more resilient my health becomes.

I will likely be facing another surgery for endometriosis this year too and I feel the stronger I am going into that, the better my recovery will be.

The key thing, though, is doing this sustainably. Although the goal posts keep shifting, I still live with limitations. And, I am realising that last year I pushed myself a bit too much in some respects.

I am beginning to appreciate that I need to let go of some goals and ambitions that I was trying to do for other people rather than myself.

Part of building my fitness will be finding acceptance with the level I am currently at and aiming for consistency.

I need to let go of trying to rush things to get to a certain point. Instead, I need to realise that consistency is the key to building better strength and fitness.

Word of the YEar 2020 Ideas

These are the two main areas I want to ‘build‘ upon and they will be my focus for 2020. Within that, I am sure there will be many smaller goals that I work towards.

  1. I love this post! This is a great idea and is probably easier to adhere to than resolutions. It also gives you a lot more wiggle room & might feel less restrictive than “rules” that come with resolutions. It’s not on your list & it’s not a word – but a phrase. My phrase for 2020 is “In bocca al lupo”. It means “into the mouth of the wolf” & it is the old Italian equivalent of “break a leg”. I learned this from my old theater teacher & I am using the phrase to inspire myself to actions when it comes to growing my business. Even when I’m scared, even when I forget my lines, even when I’m not sure what’s next, my job is to step onto the stage and inspire others. 🙂
