This has been a project I have been wanting to do for some time and I’m so happy that I’ve finally managed to create this crystal & succulent mini peace garden for my home. I bought this “bits & bobs” bowl ages ago as a way to keep my living room a bit tidier and to prevent clutter. However, all it has successfully done is create organised clutter; anything lying around gets put in the bowl instead of tidied away properly.

I’ve spoken before about the impact our environment can have on our health and I was finding myself feeling unhappy with the clutter that was gathering in this bowl on my coffee table.

As I spend a good bit of my time on the sofa just behind this coffee table, I decided to take action. What was once a cause of stress has now become a centrepiece that promotes calmness for me.

Personally, I am fascinated by crystals and when I was younger I had a collection of crystals and gemstones.

To learn a bit more about them– and out of sheer curiosity– I picked up a copy of ‘Crystal Prescriptions‘ by Judy Hall (also available on Amazon US).

Don’t get me wrong, I am personally not a believer that crystals can heal us. However, I think they are nice to have in the home and I find them calming and relaxing to have around.

At the very least, I enjoy using crystals to set intentions and to hold during visualisations/meditation. They are just a tool that I like to use.

I know not everyone will be into this sort of thing but I think we can all agree they are beautiful to look at. And creating a little peace garden with crystals and succulents makes for a pretty centrepiece in the home.

What you will need:

  1. Succulents and/or cacti of your choice (I picked mine up from Dobbies but you can buy them online)
  2. Succulent/Cactus compost
  3. Decorative stones
  4. Crystals of your choice (I’ll discuss choosing your crystals below)
  5. Moss (optional: I couldn’t find any at the garden centre but you can get this online)
  6. Bowl or terrarium (use what you already have at home or check out my suggestions below).

Selecting your crystals:

I purchased my crystals from Amazon UK and have linked them above in case you would like to purchase them for yourself. I am sure you will also be able to find similar crystals on Amazon.com.

In an ideal world, I would have gone to a shop and picked the crystals I felt most drawn to. However, there is nowhere near me that sells them.

Instead, I decided to use the ‘Crystal Prescriptions‘ book and selected crystals with supposed properties that help to relieve fatigue: rose quartz, carnelian, amethyst and bloodstone. I don’t think they will heal me as suggested but it couldn’t hurt to have these gorgeous crystals around me, right?

Choosing your container:

I used what I already had lying around in my home. You can use bowls, vases, jars, jugs or even teapots! If you are looking for something to purchase to use, here are a few suggestions:

Creating your crystal & succulent peace garden:

1. Clean out the bowl or terrarium that you are using. Place some of your stones on the bottom as this allows for drainage (succulents hate sitting in water).

2. Add a layer of moss if you have it (moss absorbs water so also helps to keep your plants from sitting in water), followed by a layer of succulent/cactus soil that is at least a couple of inches deep, and then plant your succulents. If you are using a deeper container, add layers of stones and soil (and moss if you have it) until you reach the point where you are happy to add your plants.

3. Add a layer of decorative stones.

4. Decorate with your crystals and any other adornments that you would like.

Caring for your crystal & succulent peace garden:

Plants:

Make sure your peace garden gets lots of indirect sunlight but keep it away from direct sunlight as this may burn your plants. Water infrequently (around once a week) but don’t over water as succulents will die and rot if left sitting in water; this is why the layer of stones at the bottom is also important as there are no drainage holes. Remove any dying leaves from the bottom of your plants if you notice any. That’s it! They are really low maintenance and easy to look after.

Crystals:

You can simply place your crystals carefully in your peace garden and leave them be if you just want them there for some added decoration. However, if you are a believer in their alleged healing properties there is a little more work you need to do.

It is said that crystals absorb negative energy and it’s important to purify them before use. The easiest way to do this is to place them under running water for a few minutes (though there are a few crystals you shouldn’t do this with so be sure to check). You can also place them in direct sun or moonlight for a few hours to re-energise them.

Next, you want to focus your crystals. Sit with them in your hands, one at a time, and set your intention for each crystal. If you want to help a particular symptom, be sure to state that. Repeat your intention several times.  You can then place your crystal back into the peace garden.

What do you think of this project? Is it something that you would like to create? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. So pretty! I can imagine that’s so much more pleasant to look at than a bowl of odds and ends. I can think of a few “catch all” things I have that need to be turned into beautiful mini garden.

    1. Thank you Kim. It’s so much better than what was there before. I would definitely recommend making one 🙂
