Tempur Travel Pillow Review

You know that scene from Despicable Me when Anges gets her unicorn? Well substitute the word “fluffy” for “squishy” and that was me when I got my hands on this Tempur travel pillow*.

Yes, the words “IT’S SO SQUISHY” may have escaped my mouth in a moment of pure joy and excitement. Because it is squishy… so amazingly squishy that it is the most comfortable pillow I have ever owned!

If you take anything away from this Tempur travel pillow review it’s that you need one in your life.

I was very kindly sent my Tempur travel pillow* to review by Booths Furniture and I can’t thank them enough. You know when an opportunity comes your way and it solves a problem you’ve been having?

Well, this is exactly how I feel about my Tempur pillow. You see, it’s good for quite a few uses.

3 Situations Where I Use This Pillow

1. Sitting up in bed or on the sofa

I find sitting up at a computer difficult due to my chronic illnesses and so I tend to blog on my laptop, either lying propped up in bed or horizontal on the sofa.

Although this sounds perfect, it is not all that comfortable and I end up with a million and one cushions and pillows trying to support me so that I don’t get sore.

I always end up with an achy neck after a while because I just don’t get the right support. Problem solved!!

The ergonomic design of the travel pillow means I can sit it at the top of my shoulders and it provides my neck with amazing support. Blogging just got so much more comfortable for me.

I actually use it this way any time I’m chilling out on the sofa or in bed too.

2. Travelling

Isn’t travelling the most uncomfortable thing ever when you have Fibromyalgia? I really dislike travelling any distance in a car these days, never mind flying for hours on an aeroplane.

This pillow is so lightweight and is small enough (25cm x 31cm) that you can take it with you anywhere. It rolls up to fit in a carry case, meaning it is easy to transport (though you should use this bag only for the purposes of transporting the pillow, not for storage).

I have used this pillow as support for my lower back in the car and it really makes a difference. I also think it hands down beats those traditional travel pillows that clip around your neck.

I have never gotten on well with them- they jut your neck forward, which is so uncomfortable and leads to you being in pain. I so wish I had this pillow for my long-haul flight to California last year.

I am taking a staycation soon and feel better about the car journey knowing I have this pillow.

3. Sleeping

I figured I had better test this pillow out fully and have been using it in place of my usual pillow for the past couple of weeks. Although versatile, the main purpose of this pillow is that you can take it with you when you travel.

How many of you struggle to sleep when you are in a strange bed with different pillows? Yep, me too.

The idea of taking a pillow that I am already used to (that’s not bulky and takes up a lot of space) appeals to me. I am sure it will help with the sleeping problems I encounter.

I also love that taking it means I am guaranteed to have two pillows when I stay somewhere. I am a bit of a weirdo in that I need to hug a pillow when I am sleeping.

This means that I need one for my head to rest on and another to, well, hug. Often when you stay somewhere they may only have one pillow. So. Not. Cool. At least now I know I won’t have this issue.

It did take me a couple of nights to get used to the Tempur travel pillow. This had nothing to do with the comfort of the pillow itself.

In fact, I think I said to my husband close to one million times that I couldn’t believe how comfortable it was. He humoured me for maybe the first 5 and then I could tell he was getting a little over it. Sorry, Ross!

Rather, it took me time to get used to the smaller size of the pillow. It is perfectly adequate but it’s obviously much smaller than a full sized pillow… because that’s the whole point of it of course.

I’m totally fine with it now. In fact, I’m too fine with it and opt to use it all of the time.

I would say it’s a good idea to get used to it before you travel but that, my friend, is a dangerous game (as it will make you want a full-sized pillow for your own bed!).

The Downsides

I have a full-sized memory foam pillow. I’ve had it for a few months now.

I thought it was fine and that I had grabbed myself a good bargain. It was a generic pillow from a well-known homewares store.

I remember scoffing at the price of the Tempur pillow and deciding that I did not need to be spending that amount of money. I had found a perfectly good pillow at a much lower price. Well…

My pillow now feels like a brick. No joke! The difference in quality between my generic memory foam pillow and the Tempur one is a mile apart.

My pillow didn’t have me shouting “IT’S SO SQUISHY” after all. I can see why the astronauts love their Tempur (remember those TV adverts?).

I can’t go back to my old pillow. I’m going to have to save up for a full sized Tempur one. I’m ruined (in the spoiled kind of way).

I think when I do purchase one I’ll go for the standard pillow over the ergonomic one. Only because I can switch between sleeping on my front and side.

I also move around a lot in my sleep so my pillow ends up sideways or upside down and I think the standard pillow would be better for dealing with my restless behaviour.

Back to the travel pillow. I really had to nit-pick to find something I didn’t like about it and the only thing I could muster up is the zipper on the pillow’s cover.

It sits flush but really it would be nicer if it tucked away inside the pillow. It is really a non-issue for me though because it hasn’t bothered me at all.

And, I’ve actually sewn myself a little cover for my Tempur travel pillow (I’ll talk about why in a minute). So the zip doesn’t come into contact with me anyway.

Oh, and one other thing that has nothing to do with the pillow in particular, but more memory foam in general… the stuff heats up a little from your body heat. For me, as a cold person, I love this. But I guess there will be some who might dislike that.

Reasons Why I Love This Pillow

First and foremost, comfort. If you haven’t already gathered, this pillow is ridiculously comfortable. It seriously supports your head and neck so well and effortlessly moulds to your body.

It sounds cliché to say it’s like sleeping on air… but it really is! This is obviously brilliant for those of us who suffer from chronic pain as it helps to create good spine alignment.

When you have Fibromyalgia, it is so important to have a soft pillow that won’t cause you pain from lying on it. I know that sounds ridiculous but it’s true.

The unfortunate truth is that comfort doesn’t always equal support. Thankfully this pillow does both.

The right pillow can be the difference between getting a good night’s sleep and being awake all night in pain. It’s definitely worth investing in quality as far as I’m concerned.

As I have mentioned, this pillow also solves a problem for me. I no longer feel uncomfortable sitting up in bed or on the sofa and it will also help me to get a better night’s sleep away from home.

I would actually add that it is helping me get a better night’s sleep at home!

Finally, a random point. As a purple haired lass right now, I also appreciate having my own pillow that I can take with me should I stay away from home.

Purple dye stains and I don’t want to be wrecking anyone else’s pillows. This is the sole reason why I have sewn my own little pillowcase for it.

It has one of its own but I don’t want that to end up purple!
