Brain Fog Tales: The Mystery Of The Missing Baffie

mystery-of-missing-baffie

Okay, I imagine there are a few a lot of people scratching their heads wondering what a baffie is, so I should probably start this tale with an explanation. You are looking at a pair of baffies in the photo above, which are totally awesome I might add. I’d say it’s a Scottish term for slippers, and it is, but I also know a couple of Scots who’ve had a confused look on their face when they first heard me say the word. You West-coasters know who you are! So, yes; this is a tale of my mysteriously disappearing slipper.

I wear my baffies all of the time in the house, with the exception of when I am cosied up on the sofa or in bed. I suffer from cold feet so they help to keep my feet warm when I am moving around the house. I was given the above rather epic pair of baffies at Christmas by my husband and I love them! No surprise, given I have loved anything to do with unicorns ever since the days of She-Ra and Swiftwind. They are by David & Goliath just in case you fancied yourself a pair too, because I mean why wouldn’t you? They are unicorn baffies!!

The other week I happened to lose one of my baffies. One was sat next to my bed and the other was nowhere to be seen. Now, I have the belief that sometimes my eyes see things and fail to inform my brain. I am that annoying person who often can’t see something for looking. I will search and search and, after enlisting the help of my husband, discover that what I was looking for was right in front of my face the whole time. I looked and I looked but said missing baffie was nowhere to be seen. I retraced my steps all through the house, looked under the bed and sofa… nothing. My husband even had a look for me and couldn’t find it either. I figured it must be somewhere in the house. It was highly unlikely that I would go outside wearing one baffie and happen to lose it. I mean, I am a bit daft sometimes, but that’s taking it to a whole other level!!

As with all things that go missing, I figured I’d probably come across it eventually. And that’s exactly what happened. My husband had taken me to work one morning as I had a meeting about my sickness absence. When I came home I was wiped out and headed for a lie down in bed. There, sat by it’s counterpart, was my missing baffie. A sad, lonely baffie was now back to being a happy pair. “Oh you found it!” I exclaimed to my husband who then answered my calls of thankfulness with confusion. You see, he hadn’t found my missing baffie. He had no idea what I was talking about when I shouted at him. I clarified the situation and he told me he was not the one who found it.

Now, my first thought was that my husband was messing with me. You see, when you suffer from brain fog it has the potential to be quite humorous. I genuinely thought he was lying to me to start with but soon realised he was telling the truth. My husband had not found my missing baffie. So who had?! “FAIRIES!“, I shouted with excitement!! Totally a logical conclusion, right? Though I had to side with my husband when he said probably not. So how on earth did the missing baffie suddenly reappear? Where had it been? How did it get back to being beside its other half?

I walked through to the en-suite and noticed my washing basket was empty. My mum, bless her, had taken my washing to do for me when I was out in the morning (she came to pick up and walk my dog and took the washing away with her). She often helps me with this, which I am so thankful for. I rang my mum and told her about the missing baffie (and the fairies) and asked if she had been the one to find it. Of course, she had. Embarrassingly, I had not just thrown my baffie into the wash basket without realising it, I had obviously been wearing one baffie when taking off a pair of jeans. My baffie had ended up inside the leg of said jeans and then put in the wash basket. Much laughter erupted on the phone. Why on earth did I have just one baffie on and how did I not notice it getting caught up in my jeans? Of course I know the answer…. BRAIN FOG! Thanks fibromyalgia, you keep me laughing!

    1. I’m glad it made you laugh Alison. Haha I am secretly gutted it wasn’t fairies 😛 I am the same! I have said and done so many funny things but often I can’t remember them lol

  2. Haha, brilliant, I learnt something today.

My best brain fog story is making a cup of coffee only when I went upstairs it was just a cup of hot water, and the milk was in the cup cupboard.

    1. Haha whoops!! I have been guilty of putting things in silly places too. I guess you have to learn to laugh at yourself though, don’t you?

  3. So funny. Thanks for giving me a laugh today. I am always losing things and then finding sitting right out in the open.

    1. I am glad this post made you laugh Sue 🙂 Haha yes that’s exactly what I do too- so frustrating! 🙂

  4. Haha Funny story! I have gone into an all out panic looking for my glasses and, my husband, nonchalantly, points out that my glasses are on my face. Lol I’ve done that more than once.

My feet get cold, too, so I’m always wearing shoes in the house. Well, they look like shoes, but they are really slippers.

    1. Haha I do that on a regular basis. Keep thinking I’ve lost my glasses then find them on top of my head, doh! Slippers are the best 🙂
